Despite rainy skies, hundreds of families gathered today at 23-20 Newtown Avenue for a vibrant Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway. More than 250 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to students preparing for the new academic year, alongside food, resources, and community support.

The event was strengthened by the support of Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, whose backpack donation reflects his ongoing commitment to youth and education across the borough. Volunteers from Projekt NYC worked side by side with NYPD Community Affairs officers and Comunidad Latinx to unload trucks, set up tents and tables, assist vendors, and distribute supplies. Their resilience and teamwork were evident throughout the day, as they stepped up without hesitation to ensure the event’s success.
“Today was a powerful reminder of what happens when communities come together with purpose,” said Ted Psahos, Executive Director of Projekt NYC and President of the 114th Precinct Community Council. “We’re proud to stand alongside the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau and Comunidad Latinx to support local families and empower young people through hands-on service. These moments of connection and generosity are what build lasting change.”

Projekt NYC stresses in a press release that it remains committed to fostering youth-led civic engagement and looks forward to future collaborations that uplift and unite the Astoria community and beyond.
