NEW YORK (ANA-MPA/G. Garantzioti) –
Urgent action is required due to the volatile security situation in Syria, following the horrific violence in Sweida and the recent attack on the Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Greece, Ioannis Stamatekos, stressed.
“Transitional justice and accountability for all crimes committed will be crucial in this context,” he said.
He welcomed the announcement of indirect parliamentary elections as an important step towards a meaningful and inclusive political transition, in line with Security Council Resolution 2254, and stressed the need to ensure the participation of all groups in Syrian society.
Stamatekos reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, following yesterday’s constructive meeting between Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and his Syrian counterpart in Athens. He also underlined the need to strengthen the international humanitarian response and expressed his full solidarity with the Syrian people, who are facing the impacts of climate change with fires and severe drought.
