Drought over large parts of Greece according to METEO

With the exception of a few areas, Greece is experiencing drought conditions, according to an analysis by the METEO team at the Athens National Observatory.

A large part of Crete, the Peloponnese, eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and Lesvos are affected by severe or extreme drought (levels 4 and 5), Greece’s drought index showed on September 1.

Moderate or significant drought conditions (levels 2 and 3) are present in many areas of Attica, Evia, western mainland Greece, and Epirus, as well as on many of the country’s islands.

Overall, the geographical distribution of soil moisture in the country does not differ much from that at the beginning of August, but the below -average rainfall last month has led to an intensification of drought in already affected areas.
