Heritage Museum of Epirus Welcomes Students for Hands-On Learning Experiences

ASTORIA, NY —

The Heritage Museum of Epirus in Astoria opened its doors this week to students from parochial schools across the region as part of its newly expanded educational programming.

On Tuesday, October 28, first and second graders from A. Fantis School in Brooklyn discovered the vibrant traditional costumes of Epirus, exploring how color, fabric, and design reflect the region’s identity. The following day, seventh graders from the William Spyropoulos School in Flushing took a deeper dive into Epirote life by examining how climate and geography affect cultural traditions. Their extended visit culminated in an inspiring discussion on the courage and resilience of the women of Epirus during the Ottoman occupation and World War II.

Founded under the auspices of the Society of Epirotes Anagenesis and its Ladies Auxiliary “Souliotissai,” the Heritage Museum of Epirus is the only museum in New York City dedicated exclusively to preserving Greek heritage. Established in 2003 and beautifully renovated in 2022, the Museum continues to celebrate the rich traditions, history, and artistry of Epirus through its collection and cultural programs.

“Our goal has always been for this Museum to serve as a living resource for the Hellenic community of New York,” said Chris Pantazis, President of the Anagenesis Society. “We’re thrilled to welcome young visitors who can see, touch, and experience the stories of Epirus firsthand.”
