ATHENS –
In a landmark move for Greek tourism, visitors staying in hotels or short-term rentals within the Municipality of Zagori will now be charged a “culture fee” of €0.75 per night. This initiative—the first of its kind in Greece—was jointly approved by Minister of the Interior Theodoros Livanios and Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, following Zagori’s recent designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The fee will be added to the accommodation invoice and paid by guests upon checkout. All proceeds will go directly to the Municipality of Zagori to support local cultural and preservation efforts.
Zagori, nestled in northwestern Greece, is renowned for its 46 stone-built villages, celebrated for their distinctive traditional architecture and interconnected by a remarkable network of cobbled paths and arched bridges.
In recent years, the region has experienced a surge in tourism development, with a growing number of hotels, guesthouses, and rental properties enhancing its appeal to travelers.
