ASTORIA, NY –
Andreas Migias, a lifelong resident of Astoria, NY, announced on December 10 that he will be running for New York State Assembly in District 34, which includes parts of Astoria, Jackson Heights, Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, and Woodside.
Migias has served on Queens Community Board 1 since 2022 and has been co-chair of the Land Use Committee since 2024.
“Our politicians are failing the hardworking families who live in this district”, says Migias. “The prices of essentials are out of control, from housing and healthcare to groceries and education. But wages haven’t kept up. We are seeing young people, longtime neighbors, and families being priced out of our district. This moment demands new leadership grounded in the reality of these challenges. I am not waiting”.
Migias’ bold plans for Albany include holding insurance and pharmaceutical companies accountable for fair and transparent pricing, having New York State manufacture generic drugs like insulin at reduced cost, fighting for universal child care, incorporating internships into the high school curriculum, and prioritizing the construction of three -bedroom apartments for families.
Born and raised in Astoria, Migias is the grandson of Greek immigrants who arrived in New York in the early 1970s. “Both my parents were first-generation college students, and their efforts to better themselves instilled in me the values of education, hard work, and community. My entire education, from P.S. 122 Q to Townsend Harris High School, Binghamton University, and eventually Brooklyn Law School, was a product of the public school system—a place where I saw those values put into practice”, he notes on his campaign website. “Having benefited directly from the public institutions my family believed in, I want to strengthen these opportunities through a career in public service. But today, these values are under threat”.
