NEW YORK, NY – GNUSA

Zohran Mamdani was officially sworn in as New York City’s 112th mayor during a private ceremony just after midnight on New Year’s Day.

The ceremony, administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James, was held at the Old City Hall Station, a long-closed subway station beneath NYC ‘s City Hall. The location is one of New York’s 28 original subway stations that opened in 1904.

‘This is truly the honor and the privilege of a lifetime’, he said moments after being sworn in.

A public ceremonial swearing‑in is scheduled for Thursday afternoon on the steps of City Hall. The event will be accompanied by a block party along a stretch of Broadway leading to City Hall, where thousands are expected to attend. According to Mamdani’s office, the celebration will feature musical performances, cultural programming, and interfaith elements.

Mamdani is the first Muslim and the first person of South Asian descent to serve as New York City’s mayor. Prior to becoming Mayor, he represented the 36th New York State Assembly District and its neighborhoods of Astoria, Ditmars-Steinway, and Astoria Heights.

He succeeds former Mayor Eric Adams, whose 4 – year tenure at City Hall ended at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2025, when he pushed the button to start the Times Square’s ball drop.
