The Embassy of Greece in Argentina marked World Greek Language Day on February 9, with a well‑attended celebration titled “The Greek, Our Language”. The event, organized in cooperation with the Fundación Helénica En Argentina, took place at the headquarters of the Hellenic Collective Association of Buenos Aires.

The program opened with remarks by Foundation President Alejandro Stratiotis, Hellenic Collective President Angel Voukelatos, and Consul Michalis Chaintoutis, who also moderated the discussion. Representing the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires and South America, Father Damianos delivered a greeting to the audience.

The main speakers were three young Argentine ambassadors of Greek descent who recently participated in the 2nd Greek Youth Diaspora Symposium, an initiative of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy under Maira Myrogianni.

They were: Melina Mygdalis, who spoke on “The evolution of the Greek language and its dialects”, George Theodorou, who presented “The historical journey of the Greek language from independence to the adoption of a unified form”, and Josefina Salangis Otaño, who analyzed “The significance of the Greek language and the process through which February 9 was established by UNESCO as World Greek Language Day”.

The event concluded with an interactive trivia session based on the speakers’ presentations. Attendees of Greek descent expressed pride in the celebration, while philhellenes and students of Greek language courses showed strong interest.

In parallel with the celebration, the Embassy is supporting two online conferences: a) “The Greeks and the Greek Language: Four Millennia of History,” organized by Dr. Mario Ritacco of the National University of the South (UNS), and b) “Homage to the International Day of the Greek Language,” organized by @NOSTOS President Dr. Cristina Tsardikos.
