“The Greek Revolution Through American Eyes” Exhibition to Open in Astoria

NEW YORK, NY –

A bicentennial exhibition exploring the shared ideals and historical ties that connected Hellas and the United States during the struggle for Greek Independence is coming to the Stathakeion Cultural Center in Astoria (22-51 29th Street, Astoria, NY 11105), soon and just in time for the 205th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, Lou Katsos, Chairman of the 2026 Parade Committee, has announced.

Titled “The Greek Revolution (1821–1829) Through American Eyes”, the exhibition, curated by Professor Tom Papademetriou, will remain open to the public through the New York Greek Independence Day Parade on April 26.

Through documents, images, and personal accounts, the exhibition highlights the many ways individual Americans engaged with and supported the Greek revolutionary cause. At the same time, it invites visitors to reflect on the formation of American identity during the republic’s first fifty years, a period when U.S. foreign policy was still emerging and the unresolved issue of slavery was pushing the nation toward its own defining conflict.

By examining the Greek Revolution through the perspective of American observers, supporters, and Philhellenes, the exhibition reveals the powerful exchange of ideas about freedom, democracy, and national self-determination that connected the two nations during the early nineteenth century.

Katsos expressed his gratitude to Professor Tom Papademetriou of Stockton University, who curated this outstanding exhibition and is generously lending it to the Parade Committee, and to Professor Constantine Hatzidimitriou, who suggested bringing the exhibition to the Stathakion Center and who was also one of its scholarly contributors.
