The Federation of Hellenic Societies Parade Committee, in collaboration with the Greek American Folklore Society (GAFS), successfully hosted the inaugural “Vimata Eleftherias – Steps of Freedom” Hellenic Dance Weekend, on March 20–22, in Astoria.

The three-day cultural event brought together dancers, instructors, musicians, and Greek culture enthusiasts from across the region for an immersive celebration of Hellenic dance traditions. Hosted at the Stathakion Cultural Center and culminating in a vibrant final exhibition at Athens Square Park, the weekend featured a dynamic program of workshops, performances, and community engagement.

Participants of all ages took part in instructional sessions, gaining both technical skills and a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural significance behind traditional Greek dances. The event highlighted the diversity of Hellenic dance while fostering a strong sense of community, collaboration, and cultural pride.

“This partnership reflects more than collaboration—it reflects responsibility”, said Louis Katsos, Chairman of the Federation of Hellenic Societies Parade Committee. “As we commemorate the 205th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution and the 250th Anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, this event honored our shared ideals of liberty and demonstrated how culture keeps these ideals alive”.

A highlight of the weekend was the participation of renowned dance instructor and vocalist Kostas Mitsis, who led a series of workshops focused on the Epirus region of Greece. His sessions combined dance instruction with live singing and cultural storytelling, offering participants a rich and authentic experience.

“The Greek American Folklore Society is honored to have collaborated on this meaningful event”, said Vaia Allagianni, Artistic Director of GAFS. “Welcoming Kostas Mitsis from Greece and seeing the community come together in such a powerful way made this weekend truly unforgettable”.

The Greek American Folklore Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to the research, preservation, and teaching of Greek folklore, with a focus on traditional dance, music, and customs.

The event drew strong attendance and enthusiastic participation, showing the importance of preserving and celebrating Greek cultural heritage in the United States. Organizers expressed their gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to the success of the inaugural Hellenic Dance Weekend.

Plans are already underway for future programming as organizers look to build on the momentum of this year’s event.
