The Municipality of Nisyros, in collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), is taking further steps to strengthen the scientific monitoring of the island’s volcano through the installation of a new permanent seismological station in Emporeios. At the same time, according to data from the NKUA Seismology Laboratory, seismic activity in the volcanic area remains virtually non-existent, and there are currently no indications of any risk from volcanic activity.
As announced by the Mayor of Nisyros, Christofis Koroneos, the municipality’s cooperation with the Seismology Laboratory of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment at NKUA is continuing with the aim of establishing a modern Volcanological Observatory of international standing, which will provide continuous and multi-parameter monitoring of the volcano.
The new station significantly enhances the operational monitoring of seismic activity on Nisyros and in the wider region, while its data are made available to the scientific community in real time. According to NKUA, monitoring is carried out using advanced analytical methods and artificial intelligence technologies, enabling the detection of even extremely weak micro-earthquakes.
Mayor Christofis Koroneos emphasised that Nisyros is steadily developing into an international point of reference for the scientific study of volcanoes. He noted that the creation of the Volcanological Observatory will strengthen public safety, enhance the island’s international scientific profile, and create new opportunities for educational, conference and special-interest tourism. He also thanked NKUA and the scientists involved in the project for their ongoing cooperation.
