NEW YORK – Twenty‑five years after the September 11 attacks, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation is honoring the victims, recognizing the heroism that emerged from the tragedy, and reaffirming its commitment to the rebuilding and resilience of the World Trade Center community.
The full message follows:
“25 years ago, thousands of lives were tragically taken away and innumerable others were forever altered by the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Alongside the rest of the world, we mourn those losses and at the same time commemorate acts of heroism and generosity that endure as testaments to the human spirit.
For us, the World Trade Center site is akin to hallowed ground. When efforts to memorialize victims of the attacks and to bring new life to Lower Manhattan got underway, we knew we had to be a part of them.
SNF was a founding donor to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, as well as a major supporter of the rebuilding of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church as a national shrine and the construction of the Perelman Performing Arts Center.
As important to us as rebuilding physical infrastructure has been supporting the first responders who work tirelessly to keep New Yorkers safe. A yearslong collaboration with the FDNY Foundation has helped get members of the New York City Fire Department the equipment they need to perform their duties to the fullest and educate the public on fire safety, and another with the New York City Police Foundation has helped bring officers closer to the communities they serve, especially young people, while forging international ties to detect and avert threats to our fellow citizens.
On the anniversary, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is holding a commemoration ceremony beginning at 8:30 am EDT, Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church & National Shrine is hosting an interfaith memorial service at 3 pm, and the Perelman Center is hosting a free concert with the New York Philharmonic and the US Army Field Band Soldiers’ Chorus at 3:30 pm.
