ASTORIA, NY – GreekNews USA
The Spelling Bee Finals for the students of the Direct Archdiocesan District Greek American Parochial Day Schools were held on January 15, for the first time at the Saint Demetrios School Library in Astoria.
Twelve students, all winners in school competitions, from six parochial schools in New York City participated in the finals.
For the second consecutive year, Maria Sotiriadis, a student of “Argyrios Fantis” School of Sts. Constantine & Helen Cathedral in Brooklyn, was the finalist, while Sofia Papaelias, a student of the Greek American Institute (GAI) of Zoodohos Peghe in the Bronx, was the runner -up. Both students demonstrated exceptional spelling skills and a strong commitment to their academic success.
It is noteworthy that Maria Sotiriadis won the finals in 2022, as well. Again this year, her brother Elias competed with her.
“Your hard work, dedication, and love of learning continue to inspire us all. We are so proud of both Maria and Elias for showcasing their talents and representing our school and community with excellence. You’ve made us all proud—our Cathedral and Fantis family are cheering you on”, the Brooklyn Cathedral of Saints Constantine & Helen posted on social media.
The other contestants were: Elias Sotiriadis [A. Fantis School, Brooklyn], Lorenzo Surita [Greek American Institute, Bronx], Valentina Nakos and Kleopatra Nikita [St. Demetrios Greek-American School, Astoria], Mila Economou and Natalie Morton [The Cathedral School, Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in NYC], Valentina Nakos and Maria Danalis [W. Spyropoulos School of St. Nicholas in Flushing] and Jacob Caronia and Andria Rekhviashvili [D.G.K. School of Holy Cross in Brooklyn].
Following the competition, Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos, Archepiscopal Vicar of the Hellenic Community of Astoria, presented each student with a Certificate of Award. His Grace congratulated the students for their hard work and dedication and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence in all their academic achievements.
In congratulating all the participants, Dr. Anastasios Koularmanis, National Director of the Department of Greek Education, who coordinated and organized the event this year, noted that “their achievements are a testament to the dedication and academic excellence of the Greek-American Day Schools in the Archdiocese”.
Fr. Gregory Stamkopoulos, Assistant Director of the Department of Greek Education, and Fr. Evagoras Constantinides were also present.
The United States Spelling Bee competitions are sponsored by The E.W. Scripps Company. The competitions aim at improving spelling, increase vocabulary, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage. They are open to boys and girls, in grades 5 through 8.
