AHEPA’s 1st Hellenic History Tournament in NYS Hosted by St. Nicholas in Flushing, February 17

NEW YORK, NY – GreekNews USA

The First Hellenic History Tournament (HHT) in New York State sponsored by the AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) takes place at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Sarantakos Hall [196-10 Northern Blvd] in Flushing, on Saturday, February 17th.

The Hellenic History Tournament is a Jeopardy-Style competition for high-school students grades 8 to 12 who want to learn and compete in their knowledge of the millennia-long history of the Hellenes (Greeks). This competition is open to all eligible HS students grades 9 to 12 (including Middle School students attending 8th grade) who live in New York State regardless of ethnic background. Three students form a team. Each student completes the Registration Form, and each team will seek sponsorship from an AHEPA or Daughters of Penelope (DOP) chapter, a church, an organization, or business. First and second place teams will win $4,500 in cash prizes and will be invited to compete for $10,000 in prizes at the International Hellenic History Tournament to take place at a US City in the East Coast to be determined.

Vassilios (Billy) Chrissochos, a Byzantine History teacher at St. Demetrios Prep in Astoria, who serves as AHEPA District 6 (NY) board member of the Hellenic History Tournament and a co-chairman of the AHEPA National Cultural Commission says that he is very excited to be part of the committee that brings AHEPA’s HHT to the Empire State.

“This is a mammoth undertaking spearheaded by HHT Co-chair and Past AHEPA District 6 Governor, Dean Moskos, along with Sister Lainie Damaskos-Christou, District 6 Governor of the Daughters of Penelope. Congratulations also to AHEPA District 6 Governor Brother Petros Ragoussis for supporting this endeavor”, he posted on social media, adding that “this is truly a fabulous initiative that will spur the interest of the students in Classics, and in Hellenic history”.

Rules for Students can be found at the AHEPA District 6 website www.ahepad6.com/HHT or google AHEPA District 6 / Hellenic History Tournament.
