WASHINGTON, DC –

The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) mourns the passing of Dr. William N. Hunter, a former Chairman of AHI and a devoted advocate for Hellenism and the Greek Orthodox faith. Dr. Hunter passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025, in Bethesda, MD, at the age of 89.

During his tenure as Chairman in the mid-1990s, Dr. Hunter advanced AHI’s mission, championing the rule of law and promoting strong U.S.-Greece-Cyprus relations. His Greek Orthodox faith was a cornerstone of his life, from serving as an altar boy and chanter to becoming an Archon Hartoularios. He remained committed to the Church and was active in Leadership 100, AHEPA, and various parish councils and committees.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Hunter’s family during this difficult time,” said AHI President Nick Larigakis. “Dr. Hunter’s love for Hellenism, his faith, and his service to our community were truly inspiring. His service to both the Church and the community had a profound impact. On behalf of the entire AHI and AHIF Board of Directors, I extend my sincerest and deepest sympathies to his family. May his memory be eternal”.
