NEW YORK, NY – Greek News USA
In response to the devastating fires impacting local communities, Archbishop Elpidophoros will make a pastoral visit to Los Angeles, CA, this coming Monday.
His Eminence will meet with the local Greek Orthodox congregation, elected officials and civic leaders of Southern California, and view first-hand the devastation wrought by the still-burning fires that have ravaged the Los Angeles and Ventura counties since they began January 7.
Accompanying the Archbishop will be Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco, Debbie George, President of the National Philoptochos Society, Demetrios Logothetis, Chairman of Leadership 100, Hon. Steven Counelis, Regional Archon Commander, Christina Valassopoulou, Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles and Rev. Fr. Gary Kyriacou, dean of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sophia.
According to a press release by the Cathedral of St. Sophia, on January 27, His Eminence will preside over the Blessing of the Waters Ceremony, which is taking place on the westernmost side of the Santa Monica Pier.

This special service starting at 3 pm is uniting clergy, the faithful, elected officials, and civic leaders from across Southern California to seek the Lord’s guidance and grace in this time of crisis.
The ceremony includes prayers to bless the waters and petitions for strength and protection for firefighters, law enforcement, first responders, and emergency workers who selflessly dedicate themselves to saving lives, homes, and communities. It also provides much-needed spiritual comfort and solace to those who have suffered devastating losses and are seeking hope in the midst of these challenging times.
Later, on Monday, the historic Cathedral which has served as a Relief Center -from the very first moment- and continues serving as a central hub for collecting and distributing donations, will host a special dinner welcoming Archbishop Elpidophoros to the community.
Titled “An Evening of Hope and Healing”, the event will bring together the Southern California communities for fellowship, comfort and hope and to update them on fire relief efforts and ways to contribute.
“Our Southern California Greek Orthodox communities stand united in love and compassion. Together we can make a meaningful difference by extending our support to those in need. As a community, we are ready to provide strength, faith, and tangible assistance during this time of recovery”, the event invitation stresses.
