The Arizona House of Representatives honored the 204th anniversary of Greek Independence Day during its session on March 27, issuing its very first GID Proclamation sponsored by Greek American Representative, Stacey Travers.
“I’m so proud, to be Greek as well as American”, said Travers, an Athens-native scientist, and U.S. Army veteran, who was elected to represent Arizona’s District 12 in 2022.
“This is the first ever Greek Independence Day proclamation we’ve ever made here at the house. We have a large Greek and Cypriot diaspora here. And so, it is with the most incredible pride that I am able to do it”, Travers stressed welcoming AHEPA 454 & Daughters of Penelope “Aegina” 340 members to State Capitol for the celebration.
Rep Travers joined the Greek American community at their Greek Independence Day celebration on March 29th at St Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church in Chandler, AZ.
The proclamation highlighted Greece’s historical struggle for democracy and its enduring partnership with the United States, stating that “Greece is a valued NATO ally and is critical to regional stability”. It also recognized the sacrifices made by the Greek people throughout history, including during World War II, and commended the contributions of the Greek American community in Arizona and its role as a bridge between the two countries.
“And whereas Greece is 1 of only 3 nations in the world beyond the British Empire that has been allied with the United States in every major international conflict over the past 100 years. And whereas the ancient Macedonians were Hellenes in the northern province of Greece, Macedonia, and the Hellenic descendants”, states -inter alia- the proclamation, noting also the recent meeting between the Secretary of State and Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis.
