A special event on May 5, at the magnificent 15 Hudson Yards featuring the renowned archaeologist and 2026 Athens Prize recipient, Jack L. Davis, whose excavations at Pylos have reshaped modern understanding of Bronze Age Greece, kicked off the Annual Gala Week of celebration for the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.
Speaking before an audience of scholars, patrons, and supporters, Professor Davis reflected on a career devoted to archaeological discovery and the significance of archaeological research today. He was later joined by wife, archaeologist Sharon R. Stocker, with whom he co-directed excavations in Albania and at Pylos.

The discussion was moderated by Andreas Zombanakis, Trustee of the School and Chair of the Board of Overseers of the Gennadius Library.
“This evening reflects the spirit of the American School, a community united by a deep commitment to scholarship and shared purpose”, said George T. Orfanakos, Executive Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, in welcoming the Gala sponsors and guests, including Petros Dorizas, Consul of Greece in New York.
Guests were also greeted by Doretta Mistras, Overseer of the Gennadius Library, who generously underwrote the evening’s reception in honor of the Gennadius Library’s centennial and in advance of the May 6 Thalia Potamianos Lecture by Katherine E. Fleming.
