Focusing on the challenges of climate change and their impact on Crete, the proceedings of the 7th World Convention of Cretans continued on Friday, July 24, at the Orthodox Academy of Crete in Kolymbari, Chania. The second day of the Convention was dedicated to the theme “Climate Crisis and the Environment,” highlighting the need for immediate action, cooperation, and the adoption of sustainable policies for the future of the island.
In the presence of representatives from government, local authorities, academia, business, and the Cretan Diaspora, a meaningful dialogue developed around the major environmental challenges facing Crete, as well as the opportunities created through innovation, scientific knowledge, and international cooperation.
A highlight of the day was the keynote address by the former Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, who discussed the contemporary challenges posed by climate change for Greece and, in particular, for Crete. The Minister emphasized that Crete has the potential to become a European model of resilience in the face of climate change. He also stressed the importance of strengthening prevention measures, civil protection mechanisms, and the resilience of local communities against extreme weather events, wildfires, and natural disasters, noting that addressing the climate crisis requires coordinated action by the State, local government, the scientific community, and citizens.
Particular interest was also generated by the presentation of former Minister of Finance and Professor Nikos Christodoulakis, who examined the economic and developmental dimensions of the climate crisis. In his remarks, he highlighted the need for a transition to a new development model that combines economic progress with sustainability, noting that green growth, investments in renewable energy sources, and the protection of natural resources can serve as key pillars for Crete’s future.
Research and innovation also occupied a central place in the discussions on addressing environmental challenges. Speakers highlighted the high caliber of Crete’s academic and research institutions and the potential to utilize scientific knowledge in developing effective solutions that will strengthen the island’s resilience to the effects of climate change.
Particularly noteworthy were the panel discussions featuring representatives of local government. The Mayors of Chania, Panagiotis Simandirakis; Platanias, Giannis Malandrakis; Rethymno and President of the Union of Municipalities of Crete (PED Crete), Giorgos Marinakis; Kissamos, Giorgos Mylonakis; and Apokoronas, Charalampos Koukianakis, as well as the Deputy Regional Governors of Chania, Nikos Kalogeris; Rethymno, Maria Lioni; and Lasithi, Giannis Androulakis, highlighted the challenges facing local government, not only in improving infrastructure but also in securing the resources necessary to implement critical projects and initiatives.
At the same time, participants emphasized the important role that the Cretan Diaspora can play through the transfer of expertise, the development of international partnerships, and the support of innovative initiatives related to environmental protection and sustainable development.
The discussions of the second day also underscored the need to cultivate environmental awareness among younger generations and to strengthen environmental education, ensuring that the protection of Crete’s natural wealth remains a long-term priority for society as a whole.
The central message of the day was clear: Crete possesses the knowledge, human capital, and international networks required to transform the challenges of climate change into opportunities and to emerge as a model of sustainable development and green innovation in the Mediterranean.
Members of the youth delegations also had the opportunity to participate in a Cretan Dance Workshop, organized by the traditional cultural association “Viglatores” under the leadership of Iosif Viglakis, further strengthening their connection to the cultural traditions and heritage of Crete.
The proceedings of the 7th World Convention of Cretans continue on Saturday, July 25, 2026, with sessions dedicated to Education and Culture, aiming to highlight the importance of preserving Cretan identity, the Greek language, and the island’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.
