The community of St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church in Ithaca, N.Y. has been celebrating Greek Independence Day every year since its inception as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in 1964, and was doing so regularly even before it became a fully incorporated parish of the GOA.

Mayor of Ithaca Laura Lewis joined the community again this year on Sun., March 26th – as have a number of her predecessors in the past – presenting it with an official city proclamation to mark the occasion after services.

Remarks concerning the Modern Greek nation’s immense struggle for liberty from its Ottoman oppressors were also offered by Nick and Evan Lambrou.

The Mayor joined church members after the program for a special luncheon in the parish hall.

Parish Council President Ike Nestopoulos and Zach Teeter, a member of the parish council and a veteran of the United States armed forces, processed with the Greek and American flags during the post-Liturgy program as the congregation sang the Greek and American National Anthems.
