ATHENS – GNUSA
A new digital application for processing Greek passport documents has been launched by the Hellenic Police and the Ministry of Citizen Protection, following the signing of a recent Joint Ministerial Decision. The initiative aims to modernise the passport‑issuing procedure, reduce bureaucracy, improve service to citizens, and strengthen security.
The application enables the electronic transmission of all required supporting documents from the offices that receive applications directly to the Directorate of Passports and Security Documents at Hellenic Police Headquarters. According to the announcement, the system was developed at no cost to the state and fully complies with personal data protection legislation.
Its introduction is expected to significantly shorten processing times—saving up to two days previously needed for postal delivery—while reducing errors and the number of rejected applications. The new system also eliminates the need for several supporting documents, such as a digital copy of an ID, proof of payment, and certification for lost or stolen passports. Courier expenses are reduced, and security is enhanced through the submission of high‑quality digital photographs.
Initially, the application will be used by all passport offices and document‑collection points within Greece. During 2026, it will be extended to Greek consular authorities abroad, accelerating passport issuance for Greeks living overseas by up to 30 days.
The system has been operational since December 31, 2025. However, under a ministry directive, it will run in parallel with the previous procedure until January 31, 2026, for applicants who have already gathered printed documents and photographs. From August 3, 2026, possession of the new ID card will be mandatory for obtaining a Greek passport.
