New England’s Greek Community came together once again on June 1 to celebrate Greek Heritage Night along with the Boston Red Sox in a ceremony at Boston’s Fenway Park that took place before the home game against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Greek Heritage Night was sponsored by the Alpha Omega Council and paid tribute to the memory of the great Harry Agganis, honoring, as well, the Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of New England for all the work they do for the community.
Agganis, nicknamed the “Golden Greek”, was a BU football star and Boston Red Sox first baseman [1954-55] whose career was tragically cut short by a fatal illness in 1955. He died of a pulmonary embolism on June 27 of that year at 26 years old. His sudden death is considered one of the greatest tragedies to hit Boston’s sporting community.
Metropolitan Methodios of Boston and Consul General of Greece in Boston, Symeon Tegos, were also in attendance.
Greek-American Harvard student Athanasia Mezitis opened the ceremony by singing the National Anthems. Included in the festivities were also Greek Dancers on Jersey Street.
