NEW YORK – On Monday, January 3, 2022, in light of the Christmas season and the New Year, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros made pastoral visits to two local Greek-American families. The first visit was to the family of the late Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos, who died in April 2021 after being struck by a car on the Long Island Expressway in Queens where he was diverting traffic.
Officer Tsakos, a 14 year veteran of the police force, is survived by his wife, Irene, and two young children. Archbishop Elpidophoros’ visit to the family offered comfort and reminded them that Anastasios would always be remembered.
His Eminence also visited Athanasia Zapantis, the mother of George Zapantis, who died of cardiac arrest in June 2020 during a police response to his Whitestone home. The Archbishop’s visit offered solace to George’s family, especially during the holiday season.
His Eminence presided over the funerals of both Officer Tsakos in May 2021 and Zapantis in June 2020.
