On Holy Friday evening, May 3, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America joined Fr. Andreas Vithoulkas, Archepiscopal Vicar and the faithful of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at Ground Zero (WTC) for the Lamentations Service and the procession of the Epitaphios around this beautiful church.
In attendance were also Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, marking the first time that a NY Roman Catholic Archbishop has attended this service, Greece’s Interior Minister Minister Makis Voridis, and Consul General Konstantinos Konstantinou.
In a particularly emotional service, the faithful joined in chanting the Lamentations, the moving hymns of praise to the Lord which describe His ultimate triumph over death.
