Evangelos Marinakis, Founder & Chairman, Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., delivered the luncheon keynote address at the 19th Annual Capital Link International Shipping Forum held on Monday, March 31, at the Metropolitan Club in New York City.

Marinakis, who was introduced by Chris Taylor, Chief Development Officer – NYSE GROUP, described a world where shifting trade policies, growing suspicion of Chinese -built ships, and economic divergence are reshaping the maritime landscape and raised alarms over a growing reluctance by charterers to engage Chinese-built vessels -despite their improved standards and pricing.

“Even in various negotiations, either in period or even short period”, he said, “we see that charters try to avoid Chinese tonnage…. especially for cargoes that are transported in and oute of United States that don’t want to take the risk. If the trend continues, Marinakis warned, “we are going to have a two-tier market. And of course, at the end of the day, the consumer will have to pay the price because the delivered, let’s say, price for the commodity will be higher”.

The one -day Forum, held in cooperation with NYSE and NASDAQ, examines the macroeconomic issues that are shaping and transforming the international shipping markets today, featuring a comprehensive review and outlook of the various shipping markets, made more relevant by the release of companies’ annual results.
