NEW YORK, NY –

Nearly 69% of New York City residents, including 71% of Democrats, want NYC Mayor Eric Adams to resign as he faces federal indictment charges. 30% think that Adams should serve out the rest of his term, according to a Marist poll conducted September 30th and October 1st, 2024.

If Adams does not resign, 63% of residents say NY Governor Kathy Hochul should begin the process of removing him from his position. 36% do not think Hochul should take these measures.

Adams cannot hide from the controversy. More than seven in ten (72%) residents have heard, at least, a good amount about the indictment. Another 28% have heard little or nothing about the charges.

65% of residents in New York City, including 68% of Democrats, think Adams did something illegal. An additional 24% think he did something unethical but not illegal, and only 8% think he did nothing wrong.

Adams job approval rating amid the controversy is underwater with 26% saying they approve of the job he is doing, and 74% saying they disapprove. The rating is down from 37% in November of 2023. 11% strongly approve of the job Adams is doing as mayor, and 47% strongly disapprove.

81% of New York City residents, including 80% of Democrats, do not think Mayor Adams should run for re-election in 2025. 18% think he should.

“It’s hard to imagine how Mayor Adams could be faring any worse in the court of public opinion,” says Dr. Lee Miringoff, Director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion. “Not only do New York City residents think he has done something illegal, but they think he should resign or have Governor Hochul start the process of removing him from office”.

Majority Says “No Go” for Cuomo Bid for NYC Mayor

At the same time, 55% of New York City adults do not want former Governor Andrew Cuomo to run for mayor. 44% think he should make a bid for the office. Democrats, however, divide. 52% of Democrats think Cuomo should not run, and 48% think he should.

Catsimatidis considering NYC mayoral run

Moreover, John Catsimatidis, a New York City billionaire, is considering a mayoral bid if Eric Adams resigns or is ousted. “We need common sense to prevail… We need common sense individuals, too, for New York to make a comeback because we’re losing it”, the CEO of Red Apple Group and Gristedes grocery chain told host Maria Bartiromo on “Mornings with Maria” on October 14.

New Yorkers want Mayor Bloomberg back

According to a new Morning Consult poll released October 10, almost half of New Yorkers want former Mayor Mike Bloomberg to run again if Mayor Adams leaves his seat after the federal indictment. Nearly 48% of NYC residents say 82-year-old billionaire Bloomberg should step into a special election.

But New Yorkers don’t have the same opinion about former Mayor Bill de Blasio, as a 54% said they wouldn’t want to see former Mayor Bill de Blasio to try for a comeback,
