Passenger traffic at the Athens airport took off in September with the number of passengers exceeding 3 million, the Athens International Airport said in a report on Friday.
More specifically, the airport’s passenger traffic amounted to 3 million in September 2023, 16.3% above September 2022, but also 11.8% higher than the pre-COVID September 2019.
Domestic and international passengers surpassed the 2022 levels by 14.6% and 17.2% and the 2019 levels by 16.3% and 9.9%, respectively.
Overall, during the January – September period, the airport’s passenger traffic totaled 21.68 million, above the 2022 levels by 25.7% and higher than the respective 2019 levels by 8.6%. Domestic and international passenger traffic surpassed the 2022 levels by 20.3% and 28.3%, while also exceeding the 2019 levels by 11.3% and 7.3%, respectively.
This year is on track to be a record year for the “E. Venizelos” airport of Athens, with passenger traffic expected to surpass 26 million. The number of flights totaled 186,174 in the January-September period, up 12.9% from 2022 and up 5.1% from 2019.
