On April 2, the Consulate General of Greece in Chicago laid a wreath at the statue of Demetrios Ypsilantis in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in honor of the Greek National Day.

The city was renamed in 1825 by Philhellene judge August Woodward in memory of Ypsilantis, a key figure in the Greek Revolution.

“With this gesture we honor the heroes of 1821, Ypsilantis among them, and the Philhellenes of the USA who supported the Greek cause for Independence”, the Consulate General of Greece posted on its Facebook page.

“The commemorations continue this Sunday, April 6th, with the annual Greek National Day Parade in Greektown, Detroit, where our community will come together in celebration of freedom, unity and heritage in the presence of the Presidential Guard. Ζήτω η 25η Μαρτίου! Ζήτω η Ελλάδα!”, the post continues.

The city of Ypsilanti maintains its Greek connection with a bust of Demetrios Ypsilantis by Greek sculptor Christopher Nastos that stands between a Greek and a US flag at the base of the landmark Ypsilanti Water Tower and a sister-city bond with Nafplio in Greece.
