The President of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), Christos Karaolis, met with His Excellency the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on Monday 3 August, following the successful conclusion of POMAK’s Central Council meeting and the World Conference of Cypriot Diaspora.
This year’s Conference marked a historic milestone, commemorating 50 years since the first World Conference of Cypriot Diaspora, which was inaugurated by President Archbishop Makarios in 1976.
During the meeting, Karaolis presented the key outcomes and recommendations arising from the Conference, together with POMAK’s priorities and initiatives for strengthening engagement with Cypriot communities around the world. The two also exchanged views on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue, including the recent informal meeting convened by the United Nations Secretary-General, as well as the new political landscape in the United Kingdom following the appointment of Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his Cabinet.
Karaolis reaffirmed the unwavering support of the global Cypriot diaspora for President Christodoulides’ efforts to resume meaningful negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, based on the agreed United Nations framework and in full accordance with the principles and acquis of the European Union.
Concluding the meeting, Karaolis expressed his sincere appreciation to President Christodoulides, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Constantinos Kombos, and the Service for Overseas Cypriots for their continued support and close cooperation in delivering a productive, informative and forward-looking Conference that will help shape the future direction of the global Cypriot diaspora.
