PSEKA: Kyrenia under Turkish Occupation

NEW YORK, NY   –

“How can you list Kyrenia as a good place to retire when 40,000 Turkish troops are controlling not only Kyrenia, but 36% of the Republic of Cyprus?”, asks Philip Christopher, President of PSEKA, the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus, the editor of USA Today, Kathleen Wong, urging her to review and correct her recent article.

The text of Mr. Christopher’s letter follows:

Dear Ms. Wong,

On July 20, 1974, Turkey illegally and brutally invaded the Island nation of Cyprus evicting 200,000 Greek Cypriots from their ancestral homes, destroying 500 Greek Orthodox churches and changed the demographics by importing 300,000 Turkish settlers in the 36% occupied area of Northern Cyprus.

In your recent article, you listed Kyrenia Northern Cyprus as the 9th best place to retire. There are more than 10,000 American citizens who lost their homes and properties in 1974. I was born in Cyprus and my parents died with a dream of returning to Kyrenia. How can you list Kyrenia as a good place to retire when 40,000 Turkish troops are controlling not only Kyrenia, but 36% of the Republic of Cyprus?

It’s obvious that you are not familiar with the tragedy of Cyprus and the struggle of the Cypriot people for Freedom and Justice! Further, only 10% of the homes in the northern occupied area have actual legal titles. Anyone who buys property in Kyrenia will be with a fake title and be liable for damages!

I urge you to review and correct your article.

Very truly yours,

Philip Christopher

President, PSEKA
