Saint Demetrios HS English Teacher Earns Recognition

John Attanas, an English teacher at Saint Demetrios High School, who is also a writer of poetry, plays, and fiction, was honored by the City College of New York, CUNY for his talent and skills.

Mr. Attanas was the sole recipient of the ROSS ALEXANDER MEMORIAL AWARD IN DRAMA and shared the JEROME LOWELL DEJUR FICTION AWARD. These awards are given annually to individuals who excel in the fields of Writing and Literature.

As an educator in Greek-American schools and NYC public schools for 30 years, John Attanas takes his passion for writing directly to his students where he encourages and promotes creative writing.

According to his website www.johnattanas.com, his plays have been produced in New York and around the U.S. since 1989. His most recent production was Forgiveness, which was performed Off-Off Broadway in early 2020. His newest play Modern won the David Dortort Prize in Playwriting.

John Attanas He is also a published novelist and biographer for young people. His novel Eddie and the Jets was published by Darby Creek Publishing (now an imprint of Lerner Books), was a JLG selection, and also a Scholastic Book Club selection. His middle grade novel Me and Too Loose won the City College Graduate Children’s Writing Award, and a selection of the novel was published in the City College journal Promethean. John has also recently returned to writing poetry, and his poems have been published in Steam Ticket, Promethean, and Theravensperch.org.
