A ministerial decision was signed on Friday by Environment & Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou on the exact coordinates of the sea blocks south of Crete in which a permit will be issued for research and exploitation of hydrocarbons.
The decision relates to sea blocks “South Crete 1” and “South Crete 2”. According to the ministry, it will be followed by the ministerial decision that will call for an international bidding process.
As Papastavrou noted a day earlier, the call for bids will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union (gazette) by the end of April, with an end-August deadline for expressions of interest. According to the timetable, the signing and ratification by the Greek Parliament is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
This ministerial decision follows up on the acceptance by ministerial decision (dated April 4, 2025) of an expression of interest for the two blocks off southern Crete by Chevron Balkans Exploration BV.
“The government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis implements its commitments consistently for a Greece that is energy-secure, investment-attractive, and geographically strong,” the ministry said.
