St. Demetrios Astoria School Student, Runner Up in the NYC Spelling Bee

Mila Lyssikatos of St. Demetrios Day School in Astoria

ASTORIA, NY – Mila Lyssikatos, an 8th grade Honors student at Saint Demetrios School in Astoria, represented not only her own school but also all the Greek-American Parochial Day schools in New York at the citywide Spelling Bee sponsored by Scholar Skills in coordination with the SCRIPPS Spelling Bee.

Placing an impressive 5th in a field of 40participants from schools such as Dalton, Booker T. Washington, and Hunter, Mila impressed the judges and audience with her poise, skills, humility, and team spirit. The competition lasted close to four hours and required a lot of patience, motivation, and determination.

This was Mila’s second time at the Regional Division of this rigorous competition- which has now added vocabulary to the spelling.

Ms. Lyssikatos is a star student at Saint Demetrios since pre-school; she enjoys reading, writing, and is a student of classical ballet, modern dance, and traditional Greek dance.
