Despina Avdoulou, an 8th grade student at St. Demetrios Preparatory School of Astoria, NY, is the winner of the student essay contest on the topic “What message does the Revolution of 1821 send to modern Hellenism?”
The essay contest was conducted by the Cultural subcommittee of the 2025 Parade Committee as part of the celebrations for the 204th Anniversary from the start of the Greek War of Independence of 1821.
Twenty students from Greek-American schools in the New York Metropolitan area submitted essays, and the evaluation was carried out by an independent committee of teachers.
On March 23, the winning essay was read during a public event at the Stathakeion Cultural Center of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York and the prize of $500 was awarded to Despina Avdoulou by Dimitrios Paliouras, president of the sponsoring organization, the Agrinion Benevolent Society “Saint Christopher”.
In announcing the winner, the 2025 Parade Organizing Committee congratulates Despina Avdoulou and all the students who participated in the competition and who will receive a Participation Award Certificate.
