Nektarios Tavernarakis, a professor at the School of Medicine of the University of Crete and President of the Foundation for Research and Technology (ITE) was unanimously elected president of the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC).
His four-year tenure started in January 2025. He is the first Greek to assume this position, having been the country’s scientific representative at EMBC since 2022. As pointed out in an announcement, from this position he contributed to connecting Greece with the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) programme in 2023, for financing young scientists who settle in the country (EMBO Installation Grants).
On the occasion of his election, Professor Tavernarakis stated that Greece, as active member of EMBC since 1972, supports biomedical research in Europe, while, at the same time, benefiting from the cooperation and support opportunities offered by the organisation to the Greek scientific community.
“Molecular biology is at the core of the life sciences and directly affects our daily lives – as we have seen, for example, on the occasion of the recent pandemic. My aim is, as president of the European Molecular Biology Conference, is to continue the work of the organisation by supporting scientific excellence, promoting international cooperation and ensuring the life sciences remain a high priority in the international agenda, so that we can face modern and future challenges as effectively as possible,” concluded Tavernarakis.
