A project to maintain, signpost, digitally map and promote the hiking trail network on the Greek island of Kasos has been completed, with the aim of ensuring safe access to the trails and further developing alternative tourism on the island.
The work included clearing and improving access along the routes, managing vegetation, removing obstacles and restoring traditional infrastructure, including stone steps and dry-stone walls.
A new signposting system was also installed, comprising information boards, signposts and painted trail markings. Hiking and cycling routes are digitally mapped, while the relevant website was upgraded.
An information brochure was also produced to promote the network, and Kasos’ trails were presented at the international hiking and trekking exhibition Salon du Randonneur in Lyon, France.
Mayor of the Heroic Island of Kasos Michalis Erotokritos said on Friday, the municipal authority’s aim is to develop alternative and hiking tourism in a controlled manner, capitalising on the island’s natural environment as one of its most important comparative advantages.
