The Hellenic American Academy hosted the 2025 Ellinomatheia (Certificate of Attainment in Greek) Award Ceremony on November 7, recognizing the achievements of 158 students from across the Midwest who earned Certificates of Attainment in Greek, ranging from levels A1 through C2.
Students who achieve Level B1 or higher are eligible to present their certificate to their high schools to receive the Seal of Biliteracy upon graduation — a distinction that honors proficiency in two or more languages.

As the formally accredited (by the Greek Ministry of Education) Midwest Regional Examination Center for the Exams of Attainment in the Greek Language, the Hellenic American Academy continues to uphold and promote excellence in Greek studies.
This year, the Academy had a record of 51 participants in the Ellinomatheia exams, with a 90 % success rate. Administrators described the achievement as “a true testament to the students’ effort, determination, and passion for the Greek language”, noting that all of the Academy’s Greek language programs — Day, Evening, and Saturday — prepare students to participate in these recognized exams.
Certificates were presented by Consul General of Greece in Chicago, Emmanuel Koubarakis. “The Greek language is a bridge that unites generations and continents; it is the living link between the Diaspora and Greece,” he said, inter alia, and congratulated the children, along with their parents and teachers, “who represent the future bearers of our language and culture”.

A Facebook post by the Academy added: “The Greek language, with its rich history and evolving presence in the diaspora, remains a dynamic bridge between cultures, connecting generations and enriching the academic and cultural horizons of our students. By fostering fluency and appreciation for this timeless language, we empower learners to carry forward a living tradition that continues to shape global thought and identity.”
