Bishop Sevastianos Welcomed in Ft. Lauderdale for Celebration of Learning

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fl –His Grace Bishop Sevastianos of Zela was the keynote speaker at the Celebration of Learning at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Lauderdale in Florida on March 6.

This biennial luncheon event supports scholarships for children of the St. Demetrios parish to attend religious summer programs like St. Stephen’s Camp, and to encourage higher education. The St. Demetrios Scholarship Committee has awarded scholarships to 40 children in the past six years.

Father Peter Zougras, Proistamenos of St. Demetrios, welcomed His Grace who presided over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. The Bishop’s presentation was inspirational as he focused on the legacy of the Three Hierarchs and the value of their teachings.

The event included a catered lunch and a beautiful musical presentation by Cyprus New York Productions. The concert entitled “Believe” featured classical and contemporary selections such as Ave Maria by Bach, musical theater pieces such as Somewhere (West Side Story) and contemporary classics such as You Raise Me Up (Josh Groban) and The Prayer (Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli).

The musicians, Ariadne Anna (Soprano), Demetris Michael (Tenor), and Phytos Stratis (Artistic & Musical Director) are from Cyprus and have performed at ecumenical events in New York and Atlanta.

“It has been an emotional two years but believing that we would get through this kept us going. This concert was put together to provide encouragement and hope”, said Stratis, President and Artistic Director of Cyprus New York Productions, who dedicated the concert to the scholarship recipients, wishing them to believe in themselves and excel in all their endeavors.
