Saint Demetrios Prep School in Astoria held its 2nd Young Alumni Career Night on Friday, January 26. High School Alumni from years 2003-2018 met with current high school students to discuss how their education at Saint Demetrios impacted not only their college education but also their careers and lives.
It was an evening filled with emotions ranging from tears of joy to laughter to gratitude as young men and women who are now professors, business executives, members of the diplomatic circle, architects/urban planners, attorneys, and medical professionals eloquently explained how they feel about the school community and the qualities learned which are needed to succeed once you leave high school. The current high school students had the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers and even look into networking opportunities.
As part of the evening’s event, high school teachers who have dedicated more than ten years to our school were acknowledged for their service; Mrs. Rita Syntilas, Ms. Peggy Simakos, Ms. Christina Makridis, Mr. Spiros Tsoumpariotis, Mr. Stavros Kilimitzoglou, Mr. Adam Wittenstein, Mr. Elias Sanopoulos, and Mr. William Capitano.
This was the second year this event was organized by the high school administration and college advisement office. In attendance were Father Anargyros Stavropoulos, Dean of St. Demetrios Cathedral, along with Fr. Gedeon Varytimos, Mrs. Betsy Sideris (assistant principal of the lower ES), Dr. John B. Alfieri (supervising principal), Mrs. Helen Karagiorgos (assistant principal of the HS), Mr. Nicholas Tavantzis (executive board member of the Alumni Association), members of the faculty/staff, and parents.
