Saint George Church of Norwalk Prepares for Consecration services, Oct. 30-31

NORWALK, CT –

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Norwalk, Connecticut, will celebrate a historic milestone in the life of its parish with the Consecration of its church on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, together with attending hierarchs and clergy.

The Consecration represents one of the most sacred and significant events in the life of an Orthodox Christian parish. Through this ancient and solemn service, the church building is formally dedicated to the worship of Almighty God, and its Holy Altar is consecrated as the spiritual heart of the community for generations to come.

A central moment of the ceremony will be the placement of holy relics of Saint George the Great Martyr and Trophy-Bearer and the Five Holy Martyrs of Samothrace within the Holy Altar, following the ancient tradition of the Orthodox Church. The Altar will be washed, anointed with Holy Chrism, and vested, signifying its sanctification for the celebration of the Divine Eucharist.

The celebration will also feature a special Byzantine choir, Doxologia, traveling from Thessaloniki, Greece, under the direction of Fr. Cherubim Tsinoglou, bringing the beauty and solemnity of traditional Byzantine chant to both days of worship.

Schedule of Services and Celebrations

According to the schedule of celebrations, the festivities will begin on Friday, October 30, at 6 p.m. with Great Vespers and the Solemn Procession of the Holy Relics into the church, followed by a reception.

On Saturday, October 31, at 9 a.m., the Consecration of the Church and Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be celebrated, presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and concelebrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Athenagoras of New Jersey and Their Graces Bishop Andonios of Phasiane and Bishop Nektarios of Diokleia.

A Consecration Banquet will follow at 1 p.m., celebrating this historic occasion with parishioners, clergy, benefactors, and friends of Saint George.

A Legacy of Faith for Future Generations

The Consecration is not merely the dedication of a building. It is a profound expression of the living faith, sacrifices, and devotion of the generations who have built and sustained the Saint George community, notes a press announcement by the parish.

As part of this historic celebration, the names of living and departed loved ones submitted by participating faithful will be placed within the Holy Altar as a lasting remembrance of their connection to the spiritual life of the parish.

“The Consecration of our church is a moment of profound thanksgiving to Almighty God. It honors the faith and sacrifices of those who came before us, celebrates the dedication of our parish family today, and entrusts this sacred church to future generations. Above all, it reminds us that the true Church is not simply a building of stone and brick, but the living Body of Christ, united in faith, worship, and love”, noted Rev. Nicholas Dassouras, proistamenos of Saint George, reflecting on the significance of the occasion.

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church warmly invites the faithful, neighboring communities, and friends of the parish to participate in this historic and spiritually significant celebration.

“This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” — Psalm 117:24 (LXX)
