Cyprus in the Fire of 1821 Lecture to Follow Parade General Meeting

NEW YORK, NY –

The tenth lecture in the 2026 Greek Independence Day Lecture Series, titled “Cyprus in the Fire of 1821,” will be delivered by Lou Katsos, Chairman of the Greek Independence Day Parade 2026 Committee of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York. The event will take place this Thursday, April 2, at 8:00 p.m. at the Stathakeion Cultural Center.

The lecture is part of the lead-up to the Greek Independence Day Parade on Fifth Avenue, scheduled for April 26, and will follow the weekly public Parade Meeting (Panomogeneiaki), held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

In his presentation, the speaker will highlight a significant yet often overlooked chapter of the Pan-Hellenic experience during the Revolution of 1821. He will recount the dramatic story of Cyprus’s role in the Greek War of Independence, including the martyrdom of Archbishop Kyprianos and the Cypriot clergy in July 1821, the participation of Cypriot volunteers in the revolutionary forces, and the vital contributions of the Cypriot diaspora to the struggle for freedom.

Admission is Free, and all are welcome!

The 2026 87th Greek Independence Day Parade marks a double anniversary: the 205th Anniversary of the March 25, 1821, start of the Greek Struggle for Independence, and the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of American Independence in 1776.

The Parade will take place on Sunday, April 26, 2026, on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, honoring both of these anniversaries and our Hellenic heritage. Your presence and participation are crucial to our success.
