Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias was received on Tuesday by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Mansion in Nicosia.
Upon his arrival, he stressed that he “conveys the support of the Greek Prime Minister, the Greek government and Greek society to the entire Cypriot people”.
“These are difficult times for the wider region, but Greece wants to declare, in the most categorical manner, which involves both symbolism and substance, its intention to provide, as much as possible and within its powers and capabilities, any assistance it can to Cyprus, to the Cypriot people, to all the legal residents of the Republic of Cyprus,” Dendias underlined.
“I will discuss with the Minister of Defense Vasilis Palmas the formal parts of this assistance and we are completely at your disposal,” Dendias stated.
On his part, Christodoulides publicly thanked the Greek Prime Minister and the Minister of National Defense of Greece for the immediate response to the request of the Republic of Cyprus.
“In a difficult moment for the Republic of Cyprus, Greece once again declares its presence,” the President of the Republic of Cyprus said. “An exceptional move,” he said, “of practical and symbolic importance, a move that paves the way for the European Union as well.”
“After your immediate response, other European states will follow,” he added.
As Christodoulides noted, he has already spoken with French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as with the leaders of Italy and Germany. “I hope that normal conditions will soon prevail in our region, where despite the many challenges there are also many opportunities, through the cooperation that Cyprus and Greece, Greece and Cyprus, have proven that they desire,” explained Christodoulides.
