The island of Sifnos as an authentic Greek destination, where gastronomy is closely intertwined with local tradition, culture and the contemporary travel experience, was highlighted in a new feature by the international culinary platform Culinary Wonderland.

According to a statement issued by the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO), the feature followed a recent familiarisation trip to Sifnos by internationally acclaimed Australian chef Shannon Bennett and his Culinary Wonderland team. The trip was organised by the GNTO’s Australia Office in cooperation with the Municipality of Sifnos and local stakeholders.

During their visit, the participants had the opportunity to experience first-hand Sifnos’ culinary heritage and contemporary cuisine, its local produce and distinctive flavours, as well as aspects of everyday life and the island’s cultural identity.

The outcome of the visit is reflected in Culinary Wonderland’s “Sifnos Guide”, written by Bennett, which showcases the Cycladic island to an international audience with a particular interest in gastronomy, culture and experiential travel.

Sifnos boasts a long-established and highly distinctive culinary tradition that forms an integral part of the island’s identity, with the legendary chef Nikolaos Tselementes being perhaps its most iconic representative. The connection between local cuisine, regional produce, traditions and the way of life of the island’s residents creates an authentic tourism product that enriches the visitor’s experience and enhances the island’s profile beyond the traditional “sun and sea” model.

The initiative forms part of efforts to promote what Greek tourism has to offer through international media and familiarisation trips, with the aim of showcasing thematic forms of tourism and authentic experiences that can, in their own right, serve as an incentive to choose Greece as a travel destination.
