NEW YORK (ANA-MPA/G. Garantzioti) –
Speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, the Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, made a strong appeal for restraint and diplomacy, amid the rapidly deteriorating security crisis that erupted after the strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
“This is the third time in 10 days that the Council has convened in emergency session, and rightly so,” Sekeris stressed, noting that “the situation is now more dangerous than ever since June 13.”
Referring to the military strikes on nuclear facilities in Iran, Sekeris said that Greece is “following very closely and with concern the evolving situation” in the Middle East and reiterated Greece’s call for “all parties to exercise restraint”, stressing that “there is no need for further violence, especially given the potentially serious consequences.”
Sekeris expressed Greece’s continued concern about Iran’s nuclear programme, stating that “it should never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.”
