KOZANI, GREECE –

Greece’s first AI-optimized supercomputer—budgeted at €30 million—will be installed, at the -under-construction- Green Data Center of the University of Western Macedonia [WoWM] in Kozani, placing the region of Western Macedonia firmly on the European map of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

“Beyond cutting-edge technology, the project represents something far greater: the creation of a powerful tool for innovation and collaboration that will strengthen research, entrepreneurship, and the region’s sustainable transition”, a press release by the University of Western Macedonia states.

The new supercomputer—Greece’s first specialized in Artificial Intelligence—is being integrated into the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, a European initiative aimed at advancing supercomputing capabilities across the continent. The project is coordinated by GRNET S.A., an entity under the Ministry of Digital Governance, in collaboration with the University of Western Macedonia. It is funded through national resources, with support from the Ministry of Digital Governance, the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, and the Region of Western Macedonia

“The University of Western Macedonia is emerging as a key player in the European research and technology landscape, strengthening the link between education, innovation, and green development”, the press release continues.

Students and researchers will gain access to advanced technologies and collaborate on cutting-edge applications with institutions both in Greece and abroad. At the same time, local businesses will benefit from capabilities previously found only in major international centers.
