Greek MFA welcomes UN Security Council’s adoption on UNFICYP mandate renewal

ATHENS, –

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece welcomes the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2771 by the UN Security Council, which renewed the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for one year.

According to a statement released by the MFA, by virtue of Resolution 2771, the Security Council sends a strong message, reaffirming its support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to resume the talks, which aim at resolving the Cyprus Issue on the basis of a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation with political equality, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.

The Greek MFA also notes that Greece, as a member of the Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, in coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, undertook consistent efforts during the negotiations for the renewal of the mandate of UNFICYP, thus recognizing its crucial role in de-escalating tensions and maintaining peace and security.

The resolution of the Cyprus Issue is a top priority for Greek foreign policy. We look forward to constructively contributing to the dialogue for a just, viable, and functional solution to the Cyprus Issue within the framework of the UN Security Council Resolutions, concludes the statement.
