Nicos Neocleous, 90, will be missed

It was with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that the Association of Asgata “Cyprus” and the Federation of the Cypriot American Organizations (FCAO) bid farewell to a beloved past president and member, Nick Neocleous, who left us peacefully at his home on January 22, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 90. 

The funeral services were held on January 28 at the Cathedral of St. Demetrios in Astoria. 

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather,Neocleous exemplified unwavering kindness and loyalty, qualities that defined his character and the life he led. He believed in the importance of family as a source of strength and support, creating an environment where peace and harmony flourished.

A dedicated furrier by trade, he was not only skilled in his craft,but also deeply committed to his community and faith. He served as president of the Asgata Association for over 25 years,as Treasurer of the Cyprus Federation for two decades and was actively involved with the Pan Cyprian Association, reflecting his dedication to serving others and his passion for community building.

“I had the privilege of working alongside Nico when he invited me to join the Association’s Executive Committee in the early 1970s, shortly after my discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces”, says nephew and Asgata Association President, Peter Louca. 

“From the beginning, Nico’s commitment to Cyprus, Hellenism, and the well-being of the Cypriot community in the United States was unmistakable. He worked relentlessly for the freedom of Cyprus and the betterment of our people. During his presidency, he was always deeply supportive of the people of his birthplace, Asgata”, he adds.

“His commitment to his community, his love for his faith, and his dedication to helping others were truly inspiring. A patriot, a devout man, and a generous philanthropist, he touched many lives. For many years, he was a member of the Executive Board at Transfiguration of Christ Church in Mattituck, always welcoming everyone with a smile and a gentle, kind spirit”, Peter Louca notes recalling that in the late 1980s, Nico Neocleous entrusted him with the presidency of the Association. 

“I have always deeply valued his guidance. He was a remarkable mentor, and I will forever treasure the wisdom he shared, particularly in those quiet moments when he offered his advice”, he says adding that: 

“He was the first person to be named an Honorary Member of the Asgata Association, a distinction we hold in great pride. His legacy continues through his beautiful family, especially his beloved wife, Χρυστάλλα (Christalla), who passed away in 1997, his sons Chris (Vasiliki), Charlie (Barbara), and Nicolas, his grandchildren (Nicholas, Steven& Anastasia, Chrystalla and Vasilios, Demetra, and Nicholas), and even a great-great-grandchild (Emmanuel). They all carry forward his values of respect, love, and kindness.

“We are incredibly proud of him, and we will always remember him with love and respect”, Peter Louca concludes. 

The Federation of Cypriot American Organizations 

“Nick Neocleous embodied the values of kindness and loyalty-qualities that defined his character and guided his life’s work”, said Kyriacos Papastylianou, president of the FCAO, expressing on behalf of the Federation “their profound sadness at the passing of a cherished and respected member of our community”.

“Nico Neocleous dedicated two decades of his life to serving as Treasurer for the Cyprus Federation of America, and he proudly served as President of the Asgata Association for over 25 years. His unwavering commitment to the cause of a “Free Cyprus” date back to 1974, when he, along with many others, organized relief efforts for the victims of the brutal invasion and occupation of Cyprus. Throughout his life, Mr. Neocleous consistently participated in the Greek Independence Day Parades, proudly honoring his heritage and advocating for his community”, he added, extending the Federation’s heartfelt condolences to the Neocleous family.
