BROOKLINE, MA –
Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (HCHC) announced today [12/1] that is considering a proposal for the conservation sale of land on Hellenic Hill to a special purpose entity managed by The Lyme Timber Company, noting that this is the result of years of deliberate study and exploration of all feasible options – including sales to developers, joint ventures, and leases.
“This proposed conservancy would align with our mission to steward our resources responsibly while advancing our educational and spiritual goals”, said President Demetrios S. Katos, PhD. “This opportunity represents the best use of the land, transforming it into a permanently protected public asset through a mandatory deed restriction that prohibits any future development”.
According to a press release, HCHC’s Board of Trustees is considering a non-binding initial term sheet for the sale of approximately 19 to 25 acres of underutilized land on Hellenic Hill to a special purpose entity managed by The Lyme Timber Company LLC (Lyme). The proposed price per acre could generate between $22.8 and $30 million in unrestricted funds to be invested in school’s endowment. Such an investment would provide recurring revenue for scholarships, faculty support, facility upgrades, and operational sustainability – in perpetuity – while enhancing the quality of HCHC’s education, facilities, and overall student experience.
Founded in 1976, Lyme is a private timberland investment management company that focuses on forest-related investments in the US and Canada. After a one- to two-year master planning phase focused on trails, access, and restoration, the property will be transferred to The Trustees of Reservations which is Massachusetts’ oldest and largest land conservation nonprofit organization) managing over 47,000 acres for public benefit.
Added Dr. Katos, “This ensures the land contributes to ecological preservation and community enjoyment, while improving safety and relieving HCHC of ongoing maintenance responsibilities.”
The Board will review this term sheet at its Dec. 9, 2025, meeting. No final decisions have been made, and the school is focused on outcomes that honor its heritage and secure its legacy.
