Inaugural Greek Independence Day Celebration Held at U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON, DC – GNUSA

Greek Americans from across the United States gathered at the U.S. Capitol on March 25, for the inaugural Greek Independence Day Celebration, honoring the 205th anniversary of Greece’s struggle for freedom and the enduring friendship between the United States and the Hellenic Republic.

This historic event brought together Members of Congress, diplomats, community and business leaders, and distinguished guests to commemorate the shared democratic values that bind the two nations.

Among the dignitaries participating in the celebration are the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Jim Risch; Congressman Gus Bilirakis, Co-Chair of the Congressional Hellenic Caucus; Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis; Congressman Mike Haridopoulos, and a United States Senator, Jon Husted from Ohio, all of whom are joining Greek American leaders and advocates from across the country.

“Beneath the dome of the United States Capitol, we honor the spirit of March 25th—the day a small nation lit a flame of freedom that inspired the world. The struggle of the Greek people reminds us that liberty is never granted; it is earned through courage, sacrifice, and unbreakable hope. As Americans and Greeks stand together, we celebrate not only a shared history of democracy but also a shared promise to defend it wherever it lives”, said Markos Marinakis.

In addition to the Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to the United States, Antonios Alexandridis, and the Ambassador of Cyprus to the U.S., Evangelos Savva, Kimberly Guilfoyle, U.S. Ambassador to Greece, delivered remarks highlighting the growing strength of the U.S.–Greece relationship. Ambassador Guilfoyle emphasized the successes of commercial diplomacy between the two NATO allies, noting the expanding economic, security, and cultural ties that continue to deepen cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The celebration, with the support of the Chios Societies of America and Canada, recognized the contributions of Greek Americans to the cultural, civic, and economic life of the United States. Community organizations, youth representatives, and national Hellenic institutions participated in the program, reflecting the vibrancy and unity of the Greek American diaspora.

The inaugural event marks the beginning of what organizers intend to be an annual tradition at the Capitol, reaffirming the shared commitment of both nations to democracy, freedom, and partnership.
