Inflation rate eased slightly in August

ATHENS – [ANA-MPA]

The inflation rate in Greece eased slightly in August, reaching 2.9 % compared to 3.1 % in July and up from 3 % in August last year, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announced on September 10.

This was mainly due to a drop in energy and fuel prices, while new price increases were recorded in food items and services. In particular, food prices rose for fruits (11.6 %), chocolates (23.2 %), and coffee (18.5 %). On the other hand, the only price decreases observed were in olive oil (33.2 %), fresh vegetables, potatoes, and sauces.

Additionally, price increases were noted in housing rents (10.9 %), clothing and footwear (7.7 %), air passenger transport (18.1 %), holiday packages (6.4 %), and health insurance premiums (7 %). Between August and July alone, housing rents rose by an additional 0.5 %.

It was also notable that price increases were recorded across all categories of goods and services without exception.
